If the fat slob who gets into bodybuilding can pack on serious muscle by doing hardly any work and eating junk why is it that a motivated skinny guy can’t build mass, muscle and strength with a good diet and a solid exercise plan?
The answer lies in the differences in body type and their respective metabolisms.
There are three main body types:
- The Endomorph are the big guys, the round guys who put on weight easily but find it very difficult to lose it. The metabolism in an Endomorph is very slow so a lot of excess energy from food gets stored as fat and if they are bodybuilding the slow metabolism allows the muscle to gain the nutrients it needs before it is burnt or stored allowing them to build muscle quite easily.
- The Mesomorphs are the mid ranged body types, typically considered the best all round athletes they have a moderate metabolism allowing them to put on muscle and lose weight the lucky devils!
- The Ectomorph is you, the skinny guy who builds mass & muscle very poorly because your metabolism burns through the energy food gives you so fast that there is nothing left to store as fat cell and also there is nothing left to feed the muscle!
So that being said, is it possible for an ectomorph to pack on pounds of lean muscle? Yes! but you need to approach bodybuilding is a different way to the other body types.
The first thing you need to do is adjust your diet drastically, you need to eat more, much much more. You need a LOT more calories that you usually would so there is enough nutrients to feed and grow muscles after workouts. This can be hard for some skinny guys as they get too full so concentrate on foods that are dense in calories such as avocados, tuna and salmon in olive oil, whole eggs, potatoes, pasta and rice.
You also need to concentrate on intensity of a workout not the length of time. Lots of reps will not get the blood flowing into the right places you need to lift heavier weights fewer times and really challenge the strength of those muscles not their endurance for the skinny guy to build mass & muscle FAST.

2010 Feb 25 1Do fat people get stronger faster than skinny people?
Me and my friend decided join a weight training program 6 months ago. He weighs 190 pounds and i weigh 120 pounds. We started off having the same strength but as time progressed, he got much stronger than me and I work out 2 times harder than him. He thinks I was slacking off but I tell him that it’s because he is 70 pounds heavier. Do you think that the heavier you are the easier it is for you to build muscle mass and strength.

2010 Feb 26 2Broad generalization there, don’t ya think?

2010 Feb 26 3Fat people already have more muscle from lifting a constant heavier weight. Also, the metabolism and bigger bone structure plays a large role.

2010 Feb 26 4Depends more on somatypes (muscle and skeletal make up) than body mass.

2010 Feb 26 6haha. you are stronger because you have more weight and more power but skinny people have more speed so if you were to fight fat would win but skinny could run a lot more faster

2010 Feb 26 9No, but bigger people have more muscle not fat people but people who are taller and naturaly bigger. Think about it if they are taller that mean they can hold more muscles

2010 Feb 26 10Bigger people have more fat to burn than smaller people. Therefore they lose weight faster.

2010 Feb 26 12Haha, wow. Like 190 is really overweight for males. Is he taller than you? If he is, he probably is stronger than you.

2010 Feb 26 13well people who have more weight on them are carrying around more weight, obviously, where as you do not carry around much weight, so you don’t get the "everyday" workout he does.

2010 Feb 26 14the faster(running) part is kinda strange,
but the fat person thing, he should be stronger than you
a person could lift upto two times their own weight
(over their shoulders ONLY)

2010 Feb 26 15I would think so because your turning all that fat on your body into muscle so yea. Just depends on how much you work out.

2010 Feb 26 18Naturally I suppose. He has more to work with than you do when you think about it. Before the program his muscles had to be stronger than yours to carry his fat self around.
**edit**
Also to enlighten the others. Fat does not magically turn into muscle. It’s not alchemy or some other magic. And also it’s impossible to create more muscle fibers than you already have. Your muscle simply expand and get larger there’s no way the fat on your arms will turn into an extra bicep.

2010 Feb 26 19I don’t think it works like that with everyone. However, if he had more fatty mass, then it makes sense that that fat was only turned into muscle as he worked out. Thus, he had more muscle because he had more fat to begin with.
To say that it is easier for heavier folks to gain muscle and strength is not necessarily true. Those "fatter" people have to work much harder to gain strength and lost their fat, converting that fat into muscle. However, because he did have more fat, he, as I said before, gained more muscle from it.

2010 Feb 26 20Probably. If you can gain weight faster, it is also possible to convert that same weight gain factor in to muscular gain. Skinny people, have high metabolisms, and to that extent, their bodies eat the muscles that are gained. Some skinny people have an extremely hard time gaining muscle weight. I believe there are three body types, I don’t remember the third though. Try muscle milk, protein shakes, etc.

2010 Feb 26 21your fat has nothing to do with strength… but your build does. Also the intensity and what you’re doing. You might be better off just doing light-medium weights and going for cardio vascular. I bet you could come close to running a 3 minute mile… while your friend would suffer severly for trying.

2010 Feb 26 23I think you’d probably like to think so and so I don’t expect you’ll give me a thumbs’ up on this, but I think that strength comes from lean muscle mass, not fat-laden muscle tissue. Fat becomes its own endocrine system and requires a lot of blood to give it nourishment so that heart is pumping extra hard, just to keep the fat alive so to speak, sounds gross, but imagine how this weakens the whole body because the other systems of the body are getting deprived of oxygen, lactic acid, proteins and all that. While you think your friend is working harder to carry around that fat, he is, but it’s like his fat is absorbing all that is required for the body to be strong. The fat compromises not only muscles, but joints, ligaments, tendons, the respiratory system, digestion, lymphatic, respiratory and reproductive system as well.
So, my suggestion is that he’s got the personality type that makes him go overboard, to where he’s not listening to his body’s messages that tell him to stop, whether it’s got to do with eating or lifting weight. If he’s not in shape and pushing too heavy too soon, without giving himself time he needs to develop healthy muscles, joints, bones, ligaments, etc. he’s likely to injure himself and go back to sitting on the couch.
You’re just paying attention, maybe because you’ve got nothing to prove, you’re heading the limits, which is a smart thing to do.

2010 Feb 26 24with the exception of identical twins everyone has different natural strength levels. people that are overweight generally have more muscle mass than those that are not, neurological adaption also occurs at different rates in everyone.
in your situation it would be highly unusual to see the much lighter person gain strength equally to the other even if you started at the same level.
