Hello Ritchie,

For most healthy males, under 10% bodyfat your abs begin to show, but while gaining muscle a good range to aim for is 10-15%.

Anything over 15%, and you are entering an unhealthy zone.

So once you get to 15%, back down a little bit on the caloric intake and do more cardio. Once your percentage goes down, you can spike up your caloric intake to hit the 15% zone again.

It´s all about tweaking and measuring.

Best of luck!

I think the American College of Sports Medicine's definition of a 'healthy' level of body fat for guys your age is about 12-14%. Most people's abs become visible at around 10%.

So to answer your question, I think if you're under 14% you're probably okay. Plus, you can always worry about losing the fat later once you've put on some muscle.

If you need some tips on how to put on muscle, click the link below for an article that's worth checking out - and good luck!
References :
http://buildrocksolidmuscle.blogspot.com/
