Im 26 years of age male and dont really mind putting on some body fat because I know thats going to happen while creating a caloric surplus to build muscle/strength.
I think the American College of Sports Medicine’s definition of a ‘healthy’ level of body fat for guys your age is about 12-14%. Most people’s abs become visible at around 10%.
So to answer your question, I think if you’re under 14% you’re probably okay. Plus, you can always worry about losing the fat later once you’ve put on some muscle.

2009 Dec 15 2Hello Ritchie,
For most healthy males, under 10% bodyfat your abs begin to show, but while gaining muscle a good range to aim for is 10-15%.
Anything over 15%, and you are entering an unhealthy zone.
So once you get to 15%, back down a little bit on the caloric intake and do more cardio. Once your percentage goes down, you can spike up your caloric intake to hit the 15% zone again.
It´s all about tweaking and measuring.
Best of luck!
